25.4M votes so far
25,402,248 early and absentee ballots returned across 43 states. That is 9,351,547 in the 22 states that report party and 16,050,701 in the 21 that report a count only. Each state is counted through its latest day. Nevada counts Clark County mail ballots only and Maryland counts mail ballots only, so the true total is higher.

What early voting is telling us
Democrats are ahead of 2024, but behind 2022 in the early vote. Republicans are down 7 points on 2024 and down 2 points on 2022, and unaffiliated or other voters up 2 points on 2024 and up 6 points on 2022. Registered Democrats are 47% of the 3.9M ballots returned so far in the 7 states where earlier years can be counted at the same point, Republicans 24% and unaffiliated or other voters 29%. At the same point in 2024 it was 42% Democratic, 31% Republican and 27% other, so Democrats are +5.4 points today. In 2022 it was 51%, 26% and 23%, so Democrats are −3.7 points against that year.
Volume Ballots are running 37% below 2024 and 27% above 2022. 2024 was a presidential year, so 2022 is the fairer yardstick for a midterm.
Where it is moving The strongest Democratic showings against 2022 are North Carolina at +2.3. Democrats are weakest relative to 2022 in Pennsylvania at −5.2 and Nevada Clark County only at −4.7. Republicans have gained on 2022 in Pennsylvania at +4.3.
Beyond the comparison Counting all 22 states that report party, this year’s early voters are 45% Democratic, 31% Republican and 24% other across 9.4M ballots, though with no earlier year to set that against. The largest states with no same-point comparison are Florida at 2.6M ballots, 40% Democratic and 40% Republican, against 33% and 43% in the finished 2024 early vote, Arizona at 884K ballots, 39% Democratic and 38% Republican, against 32% and 41% in the finished 2024 early vote, Oregon at 489K ballots, 46% Democratic and 29% Republican, against 39% and 31% in the finished 2024 early vote, and New Jersey at 435K ballots, 66% Democratic and 19% Republican, against 41% and 31% in the finished 2024 early vote, plus 11 smaller states. Their earlier years are only published as finished totals, or not at all, so they are left out of the comparison above.
Since Oct 24 137K more ballots came in and the party mix barely moved.
How to read it This is who has voted, by party registration, not how they voted. The party mix of early voters can shift as more people vote, and these states are not a sample of the country, so it is a read on enthusiasm and who is voting early, not a prediction.
In the toss-ups
What the early vote says about the toss-ups, and what it does and does not mean. “Ahead” or “behind” is Democrats’ share of ballots returned against the same point in 2024 and 2022, by party registration.
House In the House toss-ups we can read, Democrats are ahead of 2024, but behind 2022. Better than 2024 but a step back from the 2022 midterm, so Democrats are not yet beating the last midterm's early-vote strength. Democrats are 53% of the 301K ballots returned so far, +5.6 points on 2024 and −4.2 on 2022, and Republicans are 24%, −6.2 points on 2024 and +0.3 on 2022. Ballots are arriving 25% faster than 2022, a sign of strong interest for a midterm. IA-02 is the strongest sign for Democrats at −1.8 points on 2022 and PA-01 the weakest at −7.2. Florida statewide at 40% Democratic and 40% Republican among 2.6M ballots has party data but no earlier year to compare at the same point, so it says who is voting now, not whether that is unusual. No read on KY-06, MT-01 because it is not connected yet; MI-04, TX-15, TX-35, VA-01 because the state records no party.
Senate In the Senate toss-ups we can read, Democrats are ahead of 2024, but behind 2022. Better than 2024 but a step back from the 2022 midterm, so Democrats are not yet beating the last midterm's early-vote strength. Democrats are 51% of the 387K ballots returned so far, +7.2 points on 2024 and −3.5 on 2022, and Republicans are 27%, −7.4 points on 2024 and −0.7 on 2022. Ballots are arriving 33% faster than 2022, a sign of strong interest for a midterm. Maine statewide is the strongest sign for Democrats at −2.3 points on 2022 and Iowa statewide the weakest at −4.3. Kansas statewide at 48% Democratic and 39% Republican among 154K ballots and Nebraska statewide at 41% Democratic and 42% Republican among 136K ballots have party data but no earlier year to compare at the same point, so they say who is voting now, not whether that is unusual. No read on Alaska Senate for lack of party data; Michigan Senate, Ohio Senate, Texas Senate because the state records no party.
Governors In the governor toss-ups we can read, Democrats are level with 2024 and behind 2022. In line with 2024 but behind 2022: Democrats are showing up a little less than in the last midterm. Democrats are 45% of the 143K ballots returned so far, −0.1 points on 2024 and −4.7 on 2022, and Republicans are 27%, +0.3 points on 2024 and +1.7 on 2022. Ballots are arriving 7% faster than 2022, a sign of strong interest for a midterm. No read on Georgia Governor, Wisconsin Governor because the state records no party.
